Petco jumps in on New England's feud with Roger Goodell with new billboard

New England Patriots fans and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell haven’t seen eye to eye in recent years, and it’s easy to understand why.

The root of the feud for many started when Goodell suspended Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in 2015 after the “Deflategate” scandal.

Three years later, it seems, Boston still isn’t over it — and businesses are taking sides now, too.

Petco — a national pet supply store — put up a billboard along Interstate 93 in Boston on Monday. Naturally, the advertisement took a shot at PetSmart, one of its biggest competitors. But it also decided to jump into the beef between Patriots fans and the head of the NFL.

“Goodell shops at PetSmart,” the billboard reads.

Jordan Goldenberg, Petco’s vice president of brand and creative, said the company was simply just trying to do something different with the billboard, and didn’t want to let such a great opportunity go to waste.

“We’ve been trying to have more fun with the brand,” Goldenberg said. “We had this opportunity with the billboard in Boston, and being so close to the draft, we thought, ‘what could we do that’s daring, fun and brave?’

“We thought it could be fun to call out the culture around football in Boston.”

Only time will tell if the advertisement will actually boost Petco’s business in Massachusetts. So far, though, the reaction to the advertisement as been incredibly positive.

“People really do see it in a positive way in that community,” Goldenberg said. “Seeing people actually get it is great.”

One thing is for sure, though: Patriots fans’ feud with the NFL commissioner is alive and well.

Definition of 'Marketing Intelligence'

Definition: Marketing intelligence is the external data collected by a company about a specific market which it wishes to enter, to make decisions. It is the first set of data which the company analyses before making any investment decision.

Description: Marketing intelligence is usually the first data set analysed by a company about a specific market. It could be related to population age in that area, infrastructure facilities, spending habits of consumers, state or government regulations etc. Marketing intelligence is all about gathering information on various data sets, analysing the information, breaking down the data into small subsets and the distribution of information to the relevant department of the company.

A purchase department in a company would need a different data set under marketing intelligence, while a sales department would need something different. There are four main corner stones of marketing intelligence. The first one is competitor intelligence, the others are product intelligence, market understanding and customer understanding. Let’s understand each one of them in detail. Competitor intelligence is a legal method of obtaining information about products in a competitor’s portfolio. It is about analyzing strengths and weaknesses of the competitor.

The basic goal of competitive intelligence is to make better business decisions. Product Intelligence is related to gathering information about your own product. The focus around product intelligence is on gathering information about the quality and performance of the product. This is usually an automated process. With the help of this knowledge, the company tries and makes the user experience better or makes changes in the product itself to make it safer or add new features. Market Understanding is a concept wherein the company tries to understand the performance of the product in which it is already operating as well as looks at other markets where it wants to launch its product thoroughly.

Finally, understanding the customer is the utmost important aspect in the life of any product. It is key to the success of the product pre- and post-sales.

Well, I thought I was done doing mock drafts. And then the Browns decided to let the world know that they planned on taking Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall. Well, they haven't done that technically, but it sure sounds like he's going to be the guy.

It makes sense. He's my top quarterback on the board, so the Browns would be doing the right thing. If they can manage to come away with Mayfield and Bradley Chubb in the first round? Wow, that's a haul.

Or maybe they won't be able to get Chubb, as I have happening below, because he goes second overall. In that scenario the Browns move down and actually still get Saquon Barkley. I'm fully expecting to be wrong by 8:15 p.m. ET tonight. So let's roll.

Study: Seniors more likely to fall when taking opioids after hospital treatment

(NEW YORK) — Seniors recovering from trauma after being admitted to hospitals may be more likely to have falls when taking prescribed opioids, according to a new study.

While opioids are commonly used to manage acute pain, they can have harmful side effects, particularly for seniors. In this study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, those who had filled an opioid prescription within two weeks preceding their injuries were 2.4 times more likely to have suffered a fall.

“Taking opioids is like drinking alcohol” and there are side effects, according to lead study author Dr. Raoul Daoust. It’s important to remind people to use caution.

Elderly people who are prescribed opioids should be encouraged to take as few as they need and be careful when moving around at home, added Daoust, who is an emergency medicine researcher and clinician at Sacré-Coeur hospital in Montreal.

In this study, researchers looked at a decade of hospital records between 2004 and 2014, for almost 68,000 people older than 65 in Quebec, Canada, who were admitted to the hospital after a trauma — a catch-all term that generally includes falls, car accidents and penetrating injuries.

Falls were the most common type of trauma in this patient population. The average age of the patients was about 81 years old and the majority, 69 percent, were women.

Opioids help the brain manage pain, but can lead to drowsiness and dizziness in some people, the authors said. This combination of symptoms, they added, may affect balance and make falls more likely, particularly in older people.

The authors attempted to rule-out other common causes of falls like alcoholism, weakness, recent cancer diagnosis, and use of other medications that cause abnormal balance.

While this study cannot clearly state that opioid use causes falls, the authors argue that there is a clear link between the two in people over the age of 65.

One other concerning finding of this study: Patients with recent opioid use had a slightly increased risk of in-hospital death. While the study did not find a specific reason, the authors suggest that opioid use could be an overall marker of fragility and poor health in an older population.

Opioids are potent narcotics that have the power to effectively treat severe pain when used appropriately. But doctors and patients alike should remain aware of their side effects and be particularly careful with their use, especially for seniors.

Toronto FC was 4,000 kilometres away Monday when a rented van plowed into pedestrians with deadly results.

But coach Greg Vanney says the horrific attack was deeply felt by his team in Mexico as it prepared for Wednesday’s return leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final with CD Guadalajara, known as Chivas.

“I think our group, probably as much or more than any group I’ve ever been around, really genuinely loves where they are and loves Toronto and all it has to offer and its people,” the former U.S. international said. “There isn’t anybody on our team that isn’t super-happy and excited being in Toronto. And everyone feels safe.”

Captain Michael Bradley called Toronto “one of the best cities in the world.”

“We’re going to step on the field [Wednesday night] and play in a way where everybody back home in Toronto is proud,” the U.S. national team skipper said.

Vanney also hopes the MLS champions can give something back to the city when it looks to erase a 2-1 deficit from the first leg. Because of Chivas’ away goals, a 1-0 win won’t be enough for Toronto. TFC will need to win and score at least two goals on the night. A 2-1 victory, however, would send the game to extra time and possibly penalties.

“We’ve got to be smart,” Vanney said. “We can’t just give away goals. But at the same time, we know it’s incumbent upon us to go score at least two.”

TFC has a large contingent in Guadalajara, having sent 11 starters to Mexico late last week. All but two or three of the reserve squad Toronto fielded in a 5-1 loss in Houston on Saturday continued on to Mexico.

The team had 20 players in training Monday, allowing Vanney to essentially field two full squads in training.

Fullback Justin Morrow and defender Chris Mavinga flew in Tuesday afternoon. Morrow has been ruled out through injury. While Mavinga will undergo a fitness test, he is considered unlikely to take part in the game.

GUADALAJARA – The Reds hoped their performance Wednesday night would make Toronto proud in the wake of this week’s horrific attack.

Toronto FC’s Michael Bradley and coach Greg Vanney said pre-game how difficult it has been to follow developments back home after 10 people were killed in North York.

“Toronto is an incredible city – multicultural, vibrant, one of the best cities in the world. To see and read and hear and watch was going on (Monday) isn’t easy,” Bradley said.

“On the flip side, with everything that went on, I couldn’t have been more proud seeing the way first responders … responded to such a terrible situation.

“The actual video of the policeman arresting the suspect (Monday) was like nothing I’ve ever seen – the bravery to act in the way he did made me proud to call Toronto home.”

Mexican sports media have covered recent Canadian tragedies – including the incident involving the Humboldt junior hockey team.
