LONDON: Begum Kulsoom Nawaz has passed away in a London hospital on Tuesday.
She was suffering from cancer and was under treatment for the past several months at London's Harley Street Clinic.
Former first lady was diagnosed with lymphoma (throat) cancer in August 2017. She has undergone several sessions of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
She was feeling better for the last month but was shifted to the hospital last night in emergency and put on ventilator again, her son Hussain Nawaz said.
Family sources confirm that she will be laid to rest in Pakistan after family gets death certificate from the hospital and then the coroner will issue ‘out of England’ order.
Ex-prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz are serving jail term in Adiala. Both of them were in London to see her when they were convicted of corruption in Avenfield reference on July 06.
She remained unconscious all the time and unfortunately they returned to Pakistan without speaking to her.
Condolences pour in
Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa expressed deep grief and sorrow over the demise of Begum Kulsoom.
In a statement, the prime minister said all facilities will be provided to the family and heirs of Begum Kulsoom as per law. He directed the London High Commission to assist the grieved family.
Nawaz, Maryam to get parole
Jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and son-in-law Captain (retd.) Safdar will be granted parole for the funeral and burial of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, Geo reported.
Quoting Interior Ministry sources, Geo said that the three will be granted parole from the time of Begum Kulsoom’s funeral prayers till her burial, the sources said.
A request is necessary for parole to be granted, sources add.
