'American Horror Story: Apocalypse' recap: 'AHS' is back to fine and freaky form

'American Horror Story: Apocalypse' recap: 'AHS' is back to fine and freaky form
After a few disappointing installations in Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's pulpy horror anthology series, "Apocalypse" debuted on FX Wednesday night with, well, a bombastic start that sets up a crossover between the series' first and third seasons, "Murder House" and "Coven," respectively, and also rejiggers a franchise that had begun to collapse under its own absurdity.
Combining two previous stories and rushing to the end of the world is a smart way to tap back into the series' roots and bring back some of its best characters. It also allows the writers to pull on some loose strings from those early seasons, like a certain murderous toddler murdering his nanny in the show's very first season. It also feels like a logical place for the series to end (although nothing has been announced).
But beyond that, the first hour of "Apocalypse" makes it seem like "AHS" is back to creative form, too. There were whispers of something interesting in the first few episodes of "Cult" last year before the season devolved into predictable "AHS" drivel, but the opening scene of "Apocalypse" is a fantastic start. The sequence is a propulsive, riveting peek at what might happen if the world, and particularly, a very American, very Southern California slice of that world, were confronted with its immediate demise, in all its human and cartoonish foibles.
The episode opens on a pleasant Beverly Hills afternoon for Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt (Leslie Grossman), a billionaire socialite, who is getting her hair done by Mr. Gallant (Evan Peters) with her assistant Mallory (Billie Lourd) by her side. Everything's fun and games and jokes about L.A. traffic until the bombs of a nuclear holocaust start falling, and Coco's parents call to tell her she's got four tickets to a bunker that will keep her safe. Gallant grabs his Nana (the delectable Joan Collins) and the foursome takes off in a private jet with no pilot, but not before Coco leaves behind her husband Brock (Billy Eichner).
It certainly has the cynicism "AHS" thrives on (or in many cases, collapses under) but the sequence also left in some moments of pure emotion — from a teen boy being ripped away from his family to a newscaster saying goodbye to his children, which gives some heft to the campier elements that come right after. The panicked, gripping sequence sharply pivots into something far more claustrophobic.

The safe haven for Coco and friends turns out to be a converted boys school run by "The Cooperative," and the leader of the house is Wilhelmina Venable (Sarah Paulson) with some help from Ms. Miriam Mead (Kathy Bates). The Cooperative also chooses to save Timothy Campbell (Kyle Allen) and Emily (Ashley Santos), two young adults chosen, apparently, for their prodigious DNA.
It feels like a completely different show from the one in which the episode began, with hairstyles out of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," scenery out of an Edgar Allen Poe story and Paulson's over-the-top performance straight out of a hacky Shakespearean theater (in a good way).
Life at the Outpost, as they call the shelter, is, shall we say, not great. Although the rich and the selected are "purples," the elite class that wears colonial-era formalwear and is waited on by the "grays," the house is a minefield of psychological horrors; the food consists solely of vitamin-infused gelatin cubes; the radio plays the same song over and over again; and Wilhelmina and Miriam are ready at any moment to torture and kill a guest who doesn't follow the rules. It's a sort of "Hell is other people" scenario, with a little more emphasis on the literal "Hell" part.

Secretly, Wilhelmina and Miriam dress up in purple and admit that they deliberately torture the guests, and their sadism reaches its peak when they serve what appears to be a stew made of, well, a man named Stu. They traumatize the guests and make clear that this isn't the sanctuary they believed it to be. The episode zips 18 months in the future when food is even scarcer and all of the guests are on the verge of a psychological breakdown (except for Emily and Timothy, who have fallen for each other) when a visitor turns up at the gate.
It's Michael Langdon (Cody Fern), who astute "AHS" fans will remember as the satanic baby from Season 1, the child of Vivien Harmon (Connie Britton) and Tate Langdon, aka Rubber Man (Peters). Now he's all grown up and arrived at the Outpost to judge who should come with him to another shelter, one with 10 years worth of food. I'm sure his intentions are all really great, him being the anti-Christ and all.

USA VS MEXICO CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE

USA VS MEXICO CHAMPIONSHIP LEAGUE

It took a while for the next chapter in the storied rivalry between the USA and Mexico to heat up, but it finally found its calling.
A Mexico red card in the 67th minute was followed minutes later by Tyler Adams' first international goal, which broke a scoreless deadlock and gave the USA a 1-0 win in a friendly between a pair of young sides in Nashville Tuesday night. The red card and goal followed a moment of heightism from Matt Miazga, the 6-4 U.S. center back who taunted Mexico's 5-6 dynamo Diego Lainez after bodying him up and earning a foul to inject life into a match that was going through the paces otherwise.
The longtime Concacaf foes both featured interim coaches and rosters littered with untested talent as they turn the page after the 2018 World Cup cycle. It was clearly a more successful cycle for one than the other, with Mexico reaching the round of 16 in Russia and the USA failing to qualify for the first time since 1986. But they have both picked up the pieces and are getting started on the long road to the 2022 winter World Cup in Qatar.
The U.S. had the game's first chance in the fourth minute, when Weston McKennie surged forward and received a return pass before turning and firing a looping cross into the center of the box. Gyasi Zardes was able to get a head to it, but he put his chance well high of the mark and out for a goal kick.
Mexico tested goalkeeper Zack Steffen for the first time in the 16th minute. Off a corner kick, Edson Alvarez glanced a powerful header toward the crossbar, but the Columbus Crew backstop instinctively tipped it over and away from danger.

Bachelor in Paradise: Jenna Cooper Denies Cheating on Jordan Kimball

Jenna Cooper got engaged to Jordan Kimball at the end of the show's fifth season—but hours before the episode aired, rumors circulated that she had cheated on him after filming ended. Cooper, however, dismissed the claims in a statement Tuesday night. "I am aware of the allegations being made against me and they are simply untrue. I am choosing to focus on my relationship right now," Cooper told People. "Thank you for respecting my privacy at this time."
Reality Steve published screenshots earlier in the day, which purported to show Cooper had been corresponding with an unidentified man, via text, about the nature of her relationship with Kimball. In addition to sending explicit messages, she allegedly wrote, "Me and Jordan aren't together for real. I don't even like him let alone love him. I'm better than him and once I'm able to I'll break it off for good and make up some story to make him look bad if it'll make you feel better. He means nothing to me and never has." E! News has not authenticated the text messages, which Reality Steve claimed match Cooper's phone number. When E! News spoke to the newly engaged couple at the reunion taping last month, they revealed they had already set a June 9, 2019 wedding date for next summer. The couple also talked baby names, with Cooper saying, "There's a consensus: The names that I picked are going to be the names."

The environmental challenge before Imran Khan

August 31, 2018 0
The environmental challenge before Imran Khan

The environmental challenge before Imran Khan

Things won’t be easy for the new Prime Minister Imran Khan.
While the country is facing economic downfall with foreign currency reserves declining and trade deficit skyrocketing, yet there is another serious problem which will put Khan’s cabinet in trouble, that is, the climate change.
When he unveiled his party’s 100 days plan for the country in the month of May 2018, he told media and party members about the seriousness of environmental crisis that Pakistan is facing due to the emission of greenhouse gases by industrial and energy infrastructures.
He also pledged to plant 10 billion trees to tackle the effects of climate change in the same meeting. But is plantation enough to make a difference?
First of all, the plantation project will require a huge sum of money. Pakistan’s already suffering economy won’t be able to handle the financial burden of Khan’s “10 billion trees” dream.
Fertilizing tree plantation requires a large input of nitrogenous fertilizer (which also results in greenhouse gases emission), furthermore, a huge quantity of water will be used to plant trees. We cannot afford to consume large amount water on the plantation.
Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), in its recent report, has warned that by 2025 Pakistan’s per capita water handiness will be lowered up to 858 cubic meters, while the inadequacy threshold is 1000 cubic meters and currently it is 1017 cubic meters per capita! Converting agricultural land for hefty biomass plantation will reduce food production as well.
Imagine that there is a leakage in one of the drainage pipes at your home and you bring a water pump to transfer the fluid from the floor to the main sewer.
Should we assume that the problem is solved? Yes, but for a moment. Water will continue leaking from the pipe and you will have a flooded floor again.
Permanent and complete solution will be to repair the leakage, and that is it! Imran Khan will have to focus mainly on cutting carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emission.
Plantation will act as major support to tackle the climate change problem but remember, it is not a solution. Imran Khan will have to take tough decisions.
Fortunately, solutions exist and if executed properly, Pakistan can curb climate change problem.First and the foremost, construction of coal-fired power plants and coal mining at Thar Block I and II, under multi-billion dollar China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), must have to be halted as soon as possible.
Because once started functioning, tons of carbon dioxide from these power plants will be emitted, which will pollute the atmosphere. Methane – just like carbon dioxide is a heat-trapping greenhouse gas – which gets released from the coal seam and surrounding disturbed rock strata when coal is mined.
Prime Minister Imran Khan should also learn from the Chinese to invest in electricity generation projects based on renewable energy sources, especially in power generation from solar energy.
If China can invest $86 billion in solar energy at home, then why not Pakistan?
Also note that China is the largest solar market in the world, having the total installed photo-voltaic capacity of around 130 GW. Rather than building $5.6 billion worth of coal-fired power plants under CPEC, it can invest the same amount on Pakistan’s renewable green energy infrastructure.
Pakistan has huge potential to generate electricity by renewable energy sources like solar, hydro and wind. Fortunately, the country receives high levels of solar irradiation.
According to the World Bank’s solar maps report, some parts of south-western Balochistan and Sindh have an average Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI – which is the solar radiation received by any surface horizontal to the land) of over 2300 kWh/m 2.
Furthermore, ninety percent of the total area of Pakistan has GHI of over 1500 kWh/ m 2 . Germany is blessed with only one-third of the total radiance which Pakistan receives a year, but still it generated 37 TWh of electricity by using solar energy in 2013, which is half of what Pakistan requires a year.
According to studies, Pakistan has 2.9 million megawatts of solar energy potential, but unfortunately the country is producing only approx. 700 MW of electricity from solar energy.
Pakistan generates nearly 591 megawatts of electricity from wind power.
According to a report of Pakistan Meteorological Department, the gross wind power potential of 9700 sq. km of coastal area of Sindh is 43,000 megawatts; with exploitable electric power generation is estimated to be 11,000 megawatts. Also, out of 50,000 MW of electricity generation potential from hydropower, the country only has 6,902 megawatts of installed capacity.
Secondly, PM Khan can cut crude oil imports for energy production. It will help the country save billions of dollars which can ultimately be utilized to fund renewable energy projects. The country spends $12 billion annually on the import of crude oil and 70% of it is consumed on power generation which also contributes to climate change.
Yet there is another solution to finance green renewable power projects, that is, the issuance of green bonds.
These climate bonds will promote investors to invest in environmental friendly projects by giving them tax incentives.
In 2017, $161 billion worth of such securities were issued worldwide, which is turning them into one of the fastest growing asset classes.
PM Khan should consider issuing triple-A credit quality of green bonds so that he can attract more investors.
Furthermore, the government can support microfinance banks across the country by giving them subsidies, so that they can issue soft loans to their customers for installing off-grid solar power systems, which on one hand will reduce the burden on national grid and on the country’s dependence on coal and oil for electricity will decline.
Finally, the ability to develop strict environmental protection policies and then executing it in a proper manner is the key to success.
Climate change problem, at first glance looks easier to tackle, but it is harder than solving most economic problems. Plantation is not a solution by any means. Even planting wrong species contributes to climate change.
Majority of the trees which got planted under Imran Khan’s “Billion Tree Tsunami” in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were poplar, eucalyptus and willow, which emit high levels of volatile organic compounds VOCs to protect themselves from bug infestation.
These VOCs are hazardous to human health and their reactions with other air pollutants produce methane and ozone, which are powerful greenhouse gases.

The unemployment problem

August 31, 2018 0
The unemployment problem

The unemployment problem

Unemployment is the situation of actively looking for employment but not being currently employed.
Where as a person is considered unemployed when he is either unable to find any job or does not own a job according to his skills and abilities.
In Pakistan, about 58 to 60 percent people are considered literate but out of them5.9 percent or 3620.00 thousand people are unemployed which is a major cause of poverty and low living standard in the country. Some of the reasons that cause unemployment are:

Lack of job opportunities

Pakistan’s industry is already highly concentrated and due to no new addition to existing industry there is always an issue of job shortage which results in increasing competition for job and people are forced to work on low income and low status jobs which is high discouragement for youth. Along with that most of employers require two to three years of experience and multiple degrees for a job which automatically exclude fresh graduates and cause an increase in unemployment.

Increasing demand for jobs

Pakistani universities have been producing over half a million graduates, including over 10,000 IT graduates, every year since 2010, according to HEC data.
The number of university graduates in Pakistan increased from 380,773 in 2005-6 to 493,993 in 2008-09. This figure is growing with rising enrollment and contributing to Pakistan’s growing human capital. But due top private universities being at every corner there is no standard kept of number of enrollments and graduates every year which is increasing demand for jobs and due to limited supply of jobs there is an increase in unemployment each time.

Loop holes in academic structure

Our institutions are highly focused on teaching theories and making students learn them by heart, there is always a deficiency of practical implementation of these theories which actually helps in practical life by developing ideal skills set for the market.
Students performance should be judged on the basis of both written and practical implementations in field (industry) each semester because lack of appropriate skills set cause unemployment.
Lack of merit based selection: When a person in power hires, grants, awards and honors his/her contacts it is considered as favoritism, cronyism and nepotism which exploits the right to job of deserving people and cause unemployment problem in the country not only this but it also effects the efficiency of firm. These days political hiring is at its peak.

No career counseling

There is no trend of career counselling in Pakistan and a student is forced to study subjects which he or she is not interested in which effects the result and cause a student to suffer unemployment instead of following his or her passion and becoming the master of that field.
Unemployment is not only a problem itself but is also causes many problems including brain drain, depression, suicides, corruption and street crimes etc. which makes the situation even worst to handle. Local and foreign investment in the country can help in increasing employment opportunities.
For example, projects like China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) can help improve the overall situation of unemployment.

Human population growing in the world

Our population is growing

There are now more than 7,500,000,000 people on planet Earth. (UN)
It took until the early 1800s for the world population to reach one billion. Now we add a billion every 12-15 years. (UN)
The UN estimates a population of nearly 9.8bn by 2050 – 30% higher than it is today. It also projects a possible population of 11bn by then, at which rate our numbers could reach 16bn by 2100. (UN)
(For more information about global population, visit the Our numbers page.)
10,000 years ago, humans made up 1% of the weight of vertebrate land animals: the rest were all wild. Today, wild animals make up just 1%. The other 99% is humans, our farmed animals and our pets. (Vaclav Smil)

The Earth cannot provide for us all

We are currently using up the renewable resources of 1.7 Earths— unless things change, we’ll need three by 2050Global Footprint Network
Planet Earth
We will need 70% more food by 2050Food and Agriculture Organization
More than 4bn people will live in regions short of water by 2050waterfootprint.org
Due to population growth, availability of land per person in developing countries is expected to halve by 2050Food and Agriculture Organization
Globally, we’ll use 71% more resources each by 2050International Research Panel
The global demand for energy will increase by 30% by 2040International Energy Agency

The natural world is paying the price

Populations of wild animals have halved since 1970, whereas the human population has doubledWWF
The extinction rate of animals and plants is 100 times higher than it would be without the effects of human activityWWF
Climate change is happening 170 times faster than it would do without human activityGaffney & Steffen 2017
Based on today’s average global emission rates, population growth until 2050 will produce the same additional CO2 emissions as four additional USAsWorld Bank (calculation by Population Matters)

Solutions

Mother and newbornA little less makes a lot of difference

The UN’s projections are estimates based on assumptions. It also calculatesthat if, on average, there is just half-a-child less per family in the future than it has assumed, there will be one billion fewer of us by 2050 than it expects – and four billion fewer by the end of the century (within the lifetimes of many children born today).  Billions less mouths to feed, land to use and greenhouse gases to be produced.

We can bring birth rates down

Countries have had dramatic success in reducing their birth rates. Thailand, for instance, reduced its fertility rate by more than a third in just two generations with a targeted, creative and ethical family planning programme.
